Accepting Returned Books

2 min read 19 views

  1. Click Return Books in the sidebar menu.
  2. Click the Process Return button.
  3. A search box appears. Type the book's barcode, accession number, title, or the borrower's name.
  4. Click the correct item from the search results.
  5. Review the return details:
    • Who borrowed it
    • When they borrowed it
    • When it was due
    • Whether it is overdue
    • The penalty preview (how much the fine will be, if any)
  6. Select the book's condition:
    • Good (default) -- the book is in fine shape
    • Fair -- the book has minor wear
    • Damaged -- the book needs repair
    • Lost -- the borrower lost the book
  7. Click Confirm Return.

What you'll see: A success message confirming the return. If the book was overdue, the message also shows the fine amount.

What happens next:

  • If the book is in good or fair condition, it goes back on the shelf and becomes available for others.
  • If the book is damaged, it is marked as "In Repair" and cannot be borrowed until it is fixed.
  • If the book is lost, it is marked as "Withdrawn" from the collection. The borrower gets both an overdue fine (if applicable) and a replacement fee.
  • If someone has placed a hold on this book, the system automatically assigns the book to that person and notifies them.

If something goes wrong:

  • Cannot find the item -- Make sure you are typing the correct barcode or title. Try searching by the borrower's name instead.
  • Fine amount seems wrong -- Check the borrowing rules for that type of book and that type of borrower. See the "The fine amount looks wrong" troubleshooting section below.
